Become a volunteer. The HSTC
is not a sad, depressing
place. Our animals are given
wonderful care, including
good quality food, clean
living quarters and top-notch
veterinary care, donated
by our local community veterinarians.
We have various volunteer
options available for cats,
dogs and office help. There
is an ongoing and great need
for volunteers to walk and
socialize with the dogs,
as well as help with cleaning.
Each dog gets fed twice a
day and needs minimum three
walks a day; most days we
try to give them five walks.
Walks take about 10 minutes.
Because that is 30 to 50
minutes for each dog, we
can shelter only as many
dogs as we have volunteers
to care for them. Besides
exercising and socializing,
each dog must have its kennel,
bowls, toys, and blankets
washed and cleaned daily.
Cats need cuddling and the
cattery needs cleaning daily.
In addition, we need help
at the front desk too. These
are just a few opportunities
and with as little as two
hours a week you can make
a difference in the life
of a companion animal.

We house
over 50 animals everyday.
With volunteer and financial
support we could take
care of over 90 animals.
Unfortunately, we can
only shelter as many
animals as there are
volunteers and money
to cover the animal’s
needs. For instance, if we
have 6 people at the shelter
6 days a week and 2 on the
7 th day, we can only take
care of the number of animals
that 2 people can handle.
It costs $280 for the Humane
Society to get a dog ready
for adoption. We adopt them
for $75, leaving a net loss
of $205 on every dog we place
in a new home. It costs $130
to get a cat ready for adoption.
Cats are adopted out for
$50, leaving a net loss of
$80 per cat. The good news
is we are finding homes for
more and more animals then
ever before. Unfortunately,
we lose money on each adoption
making this the second weakness
in the number of animals
that can be taken in, sheltered
and made ready for adoption.
Every
adoption includes a FREE visit with a participating
Vet, a FREE bag of food,
animal’s medical history
and plenty of educational
material on building your
relationship with your new
best friend. We offer a 4-day
medical guarantee ensuring
you a healthy pet.
