Welcome to The Humane Society of Tuolumne County's Official Home Page. We are a non-profit 501c3 organization. Since 1947, our mission has been to find homes for abandoned, abused, and unwanted animals, promote Humane Education, and maintain a clean and safe environment for homeless animals awaiting adoption. Now more than ever, we are in great need of community support. We recently had to stop our spay/neuter certificate program due to lack of funds. We need this vital program in our county so that we can have an impact on the number of unwanted animals. We are hoping to reinstate the program in by the first of the year. On our site you will find information for upcoming events, past events, membership, who we are and what we do, and volunteering just to name a few. We are looking for volunteers, members, donations, businesses who wish to advertise with us, and animal lovers who wish to support our cause in many other small ways. For instance, we have a wish list of items used in our shelter, we have a new thrift store that needs donations and customers, and we have a pet supply store in our shelter. Also, we recently added an online store here to our web site, so please take a moment to look and spread the word! If you don't find what you are looking for in our store, please check our eBay auctions by clicking the link to the left of this page. For more information on ways you can help, please call us at 984-5489. The animals thank you!

This month we are celebrating Senior Pet Month at our Shelter! Adopting an older pet has many benefits like the fact that most older dogs given to shelters don't usually have behavior problems, they were just victims of well-meaning owners who didn't have the time, the right situation, the knowledge, or patience for the needs of a dog.
While many shelter dogs could use a little more training, they usually bond quickly with new owners, and have fewer needs than a young puppy.
Many older dogs are already housetrained, though they often need some reminders and a few days of adjustment time after their stay at a shelter kennel. Even if they were sadly kept outdoors only, adult dogs often only need a day or two to learn that they live inside, but eliminate outside.
Many older dogs have already lived with children. People often assume that they should start with a puppy if they have children. Puppies have sharp baby teeth and can play too roughly with young children. There are many adult dogs in the shelter that are recommended for households with children. And, teaching children about the moral benefits of saving the life of a homeless adult pet is a lesson that will never be forgotten.
Adult dogs are easier to train than young puppies because they have longer attention spans. And many shelter dogs already know some basic commands taught in their first home or by shelter volunteers.
Older Dogs are generally more predictable. A dog isn't full-grown until it's a year old, so when adopting an adult dog you already know it's full size, health and real personality.
Dogs mature out of their "teenage phase" until they are often two years old. Adopting an older pet means that someone else already had his or her shoes chewed and you get the benefit of a dog who is more mellow and allows you to finish the entire newspaper.
Don't discount a dog that is approaching a senior age. Even an eight-year-old dog has the likelihood of many more good years to give you. A senior dog often offers the sweetest rewards.
You are taking a stand against the pet overpopulation crisis and saving an animal that will bond quickly with you, and shower you with gratitude and unconditional love.
All dogs are pack animals and have high needs for regular companionship and attention inside the home with their humans. If you are gone much longer than eight or nine hours a day, a dog may not be an appropriate pet for your busy lifestyle.
If you do decide that you are ready to adopt a dog we recommend that you do some homework and be ready for your new best friend's arrival.
Come to our shelter today or click on "adopt a best friend" above to see the older animals we currently have in our shelter.

Special Requests:
The Humane Society of Tuolumne County is in need of a few special items. If you can, please donate them.
1. Large Storage sheds for our "Purrrfect Bargains" thrift store.
2. A Large high definition printer/copier
3. A high capacity digital camera SIMM card
4. A VAN or pick up truck. It would be used for transporting animals to and from various venues for off site adoptions as well as for hauling supplies to and from special events and fundraisers. The vehicle would also be useful to our thrift store for large items we could pick up and for our upcoming recycling program(details TBA). The Vehicle need not be new, but should be in reliable working condition. If you or somebody you know can contribute one as a tax-deductable donation to the Shelter, please call either Randy or Casie at 984-5489. Thank you!
5. We could use a PORTABLE BAR for use at events where we would serve alcoholic beverages under a one day license. The bar can be used to raied money at events such as the annual Oktoberfest, etc...
6. As we are making plans to have our in shelter pet supply store, "Paws Awhile" become more successful, we are hoping to do a little renovating to the entrance. In that regard, we are seeking someone with the knowledge, tools, and a love for animals, to help us with some minor changes to the outside wall, (which is indoors) to include adding shop windows, changing the door, and adding an eave to make the store look more like a charming storefront-one that you can actually notice when you walk into our front lobby. Right now, no one notices our store, because it used to be a cat room and has large dark doors and no windows at all. Our goal is to not only make people aware of the store, but that it has items fro sale that cannot be found elsewhere in Tuolumne County. If you or anyone you know would be interested in volunteering for this project, please contact the director of Marketing here at our shelter, Casie Jachetta at 984-5489. You can also email her at marketing@hsotc.org. The person(s) or business(es) who help with this project will, in return, get free advertising in our newsletter, which has about 5,000 readers, mention in local media, as well as a plaque on the front of the wall and support for their business from staff, volunteers, and members of our shelter. This is the perfect way to show that your local business not only supports the animals, but the community as well.

Contrary to popular belief, we are 100% supported through private donations and volunteers. We recieve no monies from any government entity, nor are we financially associated with The Humane Society of The United States. |
 |
We do not euthanize an animal unless our team agrees its quality of life is critically compromised. In other words, the animal has to be a danger to itself or others, or have a non-curable disease. One person does not make this decision. A Review Committee, which includes the Shelter Manager and the Kennel and Cattery Managers, as well as members of the Board of Directors and volunteers in good standing, explore every other option before the decision is made.

We placed over 600 companion animals into homes 2006-2007 fiscal years. Every adoption includes a FREE visit with a participating Vet, a FREE bag of food, animal’s medical history and plenty of educational material on building your relationship with your new best friend. We offer a 4-day medical guarantee ensuring you a healthy pet.

 |
We have a net loss of $205 on every dog and $80 on every cat adopted out. This is because we spend money to care for each of our animals, including vaccinated and spaying or neutering them. It costs $100 to adopt an altered dog, and $55 to adopt an altered cat. Local veterinarians in Tuolumne County assist us with spaying and neutering. |
 |
We accept as many animals for adoption that our donations and volunteers can support. There is no limit on how long an animal stays in our shelter. Most pets are adopted within a few weeks of arrival. We are a "limited intake" shelter-which means we choose which animals enter our shelter, and to whome we will adopt them.
|
 |
There are in excess of 60,000 people living in Tuolumne county. Over 90% of them have pets, yet we only have 1,100 members-a mere 1% of our county population. Becoming a member of the Humane Society has nominal annual fees, yet makes a vast difference in our ability to care for the homeless animals in our shelter. Being a member also has many other benefits. Please click on the "Become a Member" link at the top of this page to fill out our online new membership application and see fees and benefits.

We may share a roof with Tuolumne County Animal Control, but we are very different organizations. Animal Control, funded and operated by State and County Tax dollars, esures the public's safety by processing stray, loose, and/or agressive animals. In contrast, The Humane Society of Tuolumne County does not accept strays, but deals only with owner released animals. We do however, work closely with animal control in that we bring over adoptable dogs from them to adopt out from our shelter. This is after the animal has gone through the steps necessary by law to become adoptable, and once we agree the animal is adoptable as well. Our few employees' salaries are paid SOLELY by donations and supporters. This is why we rely heavily on the generousity of our local community and volunteers to assist us with the daily operations of the shelter.

The Humane Society of Tuolumne County is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization established December 12, 1947 . At that time, however, there was no facility. The animals available for adoption were kept in volunteers’ homes. In the late l980’s, the Humane Society gained a business office, but the animals were still kept in the homes of volunteers. Then, in 1997, the Humane Society acquired its current facility in Jamestown where there are 35 dog runs and 36 cat cages with a capacity to shelter over 90 animals.
We are a limited intake facility. Half our adoptable animals come from Tuolumne County Animal Control, and the remaining adoptable animals are owner released.
We have 5 employees; all the other people who help at the shelter are volunteers. We work at the shelter because we respect life and care about the welfare of animals.
One very important point: The Humane Society of Tuolumne County does not euthanize an animal unless its quality of life is critically compromised. One person does not make this decision. A Review Committee, which includes the Shelter Manager and the Kennel and Cattery Managers, as well as members of the Board of Directors and volunteers in good standing, explore every other option before the decision is made.
